From the recording Songs of Sligo
Debs or debutante balls have a long history. Nowadays, they are a very special event for secondary school graduates. Call it a 'prom' or a studniówka (a '100-day ball'—marking the time left until final or Leaving Cert exams in my native Poland), it is a time to remember. Hopefully, it always ends well. But the stories can travel far and be shared at class reunions for years to come. So why not turn it into a song?
Lyrics
Debs in a pub we were mad and free
Organiser vanished we got no fee
My date went dancing with folks unknown
But I found my queen so I’m not alone
Banned from hotels our school didn’t care
In a pub Laughter and booze filled up the air
My mate kissed another oh what a sight
I crashed on the floor dancing all night
Sligo’s wild night it was crazy and raw
Hearts got twisted I broke all my laws
Lost and found dreams under the moon
Debs queen beside me feeling so attuned
Tables and chairs sticky with beer
Music loud shattered every fear
Spilled my drink on a guy's shoe
But one smile from her and the world anew
Chaos reigned but we didn't mind
A night of turmoil left nothing behind
Starlit skies and wild dancing feet
With my queen
Nothing could compete
Found my Debs Queen oh what a surprise
In a long time friend with laughter in her eyes
The date I brought vanished into the night
But the love I found Set my world alight
